King: The Man

In These Times with Rabbi Ammi Hirsch: Jonathan Eig

I've always felt a deep and unspoken connection to Martin Luther King Jr., and I think of him frequently. I was raised on family stories of the friendship that King and my father shared. Portions of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 were drafted in my father's office when he was the director of the Reform Movement's Religious Action Center.

Although I never met King, I feel as if I know him personally. Jonathan Eig's Pulitzer-winning biography, "King: A Life," paints a full picture of him: King lived a turblent life. There were few moments of peace between the fire and the fury of momentous events. But it is not in the still calm of life that great characters are formed, our sages emphasized...

I asked King's biographer to join me today to help us separate the real King from the myth we've created around him and gain a new appreciation for his teachings and legacy.
