Stuck In The Middle With You

In These Times with Rabbi Ammi Hirsch: Ted Deutch

Disagreement is at the heart of the liberal tradition; it is through debate and deliberation that we are able to evolve.

But these days, the conversation feels stifled: "Disagree with me and you are my enemy — and I will try to destroy you."

It's happening everywhere in public life, including within the Jewish community and in the halls of Congress.

No one knows that better than Ted Deutch. A former U.S. congressman from Florida, Ted served six terms before retiring in September to head the American Jewish Committee. On the House Floor, he saw so much effort being poured into performance and click-seeking instead of crafting policies that benefit the majority of Americans. Ted is committed to making sure that doesn't happen in the Jewish community — that we can come together around the most important issues, and reach a consensus that strengthens us all.
